Activation
Everything a sponsor does to bring a deal to life beyond the logo: fan zones, contests, content, hospitality and in-store promotions. Activation budgets are often as large as the rights fee itself.
Ambassador (brand ambassador)
An athlete or personality paid to represent a brand over a period, usually through appearances, social media content and advertising.
Ambush marketing
A brand trying to associate itself with an event or team without paying for official rights, for example through nearby advertising or themed campaigns.
Category exclusivity
A promise that no competitor from the same product category (for example, another bank or telco) will be signed by the team or event during the contract.
Endorsement
A contract in which an athlete publicly backs a product, often combining fees, bonuses and usage rights for the athlete's name and image.
Front-of-shirt sponsor
The main shirt partner whose logo appears on the chest of a team's kit. It is usually the most valuable position on the shirt.
Hospitality
Tickets, boxes and VIP access included in a sponsorship so the sponsor can host clients, staff and partners.
In-kind sponsorship
Support paid in products or services (equipment, drinks, travel, airtime) instead of cash, or as part of a cash deal.
Kit supplier (technical partner)
The company that designs and makes a team's playing kit, often paying the team or supplying kit for free in return for the branding and merchandise rights.
Livery
The colour scheme and branding on a racing car, motorcycle, rider suit or aircraft, usually designed around the title sponsor.
Media value (AVE)
An estimate of what the sponsor's on-screen and online exposure would have cost as paid advertising. Useful for comparison, but not the same as business results.
Naming rights
The right to put a brand name on a stadium, arena, league, tournament or team, such as a league carrying its title sponsor's name.
Official partner / official supplier
Tiers of sponsorship below the title or main partner. Official partners usually get more rights and visibility than suppliers.
Performance bonus
Extra payment in a sponsorship or endorsement deal triggered by results, such as winning a title, qualifying for a tournament or reaching a ranking.
Presenting partner
A sponsor credited as "presented by" alongside the main event or team name, one step below a full title sponsor.
Rate card
A rights holder's price list for sponsorship packages and assets, used as a starting point for negotiation.
Renewal option
A clause that lets the sponsor extend the deal on agreed terms, often with a right to match competing offers.
Return on investment (ROI)
The financial return a sponsor gets compared with what it spent on rights and activation, measured through sales, leads or customer value.
Return on objectives (ROO)
Measuring a sponsorship against the goals it was bought for, such as awareness, brand image, staff engagement or market entry, not only sales.
Rights fee
The amount a sponsor pays the rights holder for the sponsorship itself, before any activation spending.
Rights holder
The organisation that owns and sells the sponsorship: a league, federation, club, event organiser or athlete.
Sleeve sponsor
A secondary shirt partner whose logo appears on the sleeve of a team's kit.
Sponsorship deck
The presentation a club, athlete or event uses to pitch sponsors, covering audience, assets, packages and prices.
Title sponsor
The lead sponsor whose name becomes part of the property's name, for example a league or tournament named after its sponsor.
Training kit sponsor
A partner whose brand appears on training and warm-up wear rather than the match shirt; a common separate deal for bigger clubs.
